The first YMCAs in what is now the present territory of Ukraine, were created in Odessa and Kyiv at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century from initiative and with the assistance of the USA YMCA Development Secretaries. Among the YMCA programs, the greatest attention was devoted to Bible studying, English courses, and student’s meetings for discussion questions for spiritual life. After the beginning of the World War I, the YMCA helped students arrange medical assistance for the wounded soldiers in hospitals, created in the University Surgeon Clinic and in Kyiv polytechnic institute. Assistance was also provided for prisoners of war.
After the revolution of 1917, the YMCA suspended its activity. In 1992, Ukraine YMCA was revived due to the support of American and Czech YMCAs. At present, there are 26 local organizations in 13 regions of Ukraine, the Crimea, Kyiv, and Sevastopol, which are united into the Inter-regional Union, registered by state authorities of Ukraine in December 2000.
Ukraine YMCA activity has been valued highly on an international level. In spring 2002, Ukraine YMCA was accepted into the European Alliance of YMCAs, which unites more than 40 National YMCA’s. Representatives from Ukraine have taken part in international seminars, trainings, festivals, and other activities within the scope of the European and World Alliances of YMCAs. Representatives of foreign YMCAs are also frequent guests in Ukraine.
In March 2002, a treaty of collaboration was signed between Ukraine YMCA and Union of Orthodox Youth of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Cooperation with other Christian confessions continues to improve. Ukraine YMCA constantly expands its areas of activity, covers new regions, and tries to create programs that respond to the vital needs of youth. |
